The tailgate latch holds the lower section of the tailgate closed by engaging the body striker, and releases it when the tailgate is opened. It's part of the rear tailgate closure system and keeps the drop-down lower tailgate secure when latched.

The tailgate latch fits the lower tailgate, mounting so it engages the striker on the vehicle body. It secures the lower drop-down section of the rear tailgate, and typically sits at the base of the tailgate aperture where the latch meets the body-mounted striker.

A tailgate latch usually needs replacing when it won't hold the tailgate closed, won't release when operated, or feels loose and rattles. Because it engages the body striker, internal mechanism wear stops it latching securely. A new latch restores a positive, secure close on the lower tailgate.
