What does the Oil Strainer Gasket do on a V8 Land Rover?

The Oil Strainer Gasket seals the joint between the oil pump pickup strainer and its mating face on the 3.5L and 4.0L V8 petrol engine. It stops oil leaking and air being drawn in on the suction side of the pump, keeping oil pickup stable. Fitted to Defender, Discovery 1 and Range Rover Classic V8 models.

When should the oil strainer gasket be replaced?

Replace the oil strainer gasket whenever the strainer or sump is removed, since these gaskets typically don't seal reliably once disturbed. A failed gasket can let the pump draw air and lose oil pressure. It's usually done as part of an oil pump or sump job rather than on its own.

Is one gasket enough, or do I need other seals for the job?

One oil strainer gasket covers the strainer-to-pump joint only. A full sump-off job typically also needs a sump gasket or sealant and any disturbed seals, which aren't included here. This part seals just the oil pickup strainer face on the V8 engine.
