Frequently asked questions

What is the ERR4959 viscous cooling fan assembly used for?
The ERR4959 viscous cooling fan assembly draws air through the radiator on V8 petrol engines. It combines the engine-driven fan with a fluid (viscous) coupling and mounts on the water pump drive behind the radiator, part of the engine cooling system.
How does the viscous fan coupling work?
The viscous coupling varies fan speed with temperature. When the engine is cold the coupling slips, cutting drag and noise; as it warms the coupling engages and the fan pulls more air through the radiator. This keeps cooling matched to demand.
What are the signs the viscous fan needs replacing?
Typical signs are engine overheating in slow traffic or at idle, a constant roaring fan noise, or a fan that spins freely by hand when the engine is hot. A failed coupling usually can't drive enough airflow to cool the V8.
Which models does this viscous fan fit?
This viscous fan fits the Discovery 2 with the 4.0L V8 EFI petrol engine and the Range Rover P38 (1994-2001) with 4.0 and 4.6 V8 petrol engines using the viscous fan drive. It isn't used on the diesel models.
