Frequently asked questions

What does the ERR7233 hydraulic lash adjuster do?
The ERR7233 hydraulic lash adjuster sits in the valve train of the 2.5L Td5 engine, between the camshaft and valve components. It uses engine oil pressure to automatically take up valve clearance, compensating for thermal expansion and wear so valve timing stays accurate. Fitted to the Defender and Discovery 2 Td5.
What are the symptoms of a failing hydraulic lash adjuster?
A failing hydraulic lash adjuster typically causes a tapping or ticking noise from the top of the Td5 engine, often worse on cold start before oil pressure builds. Worn adjusters can't hold valve clearance, which affects valve timing. Low or dirty oil usually accelerates the wear.
Can a hydraulic lash adjuster be cleaned instead of replaced?
Hydraulic lash adjusters can sometimes be cleaned if the noise is caused by oil contamination, but worn or collapsed units on the Td5 typically need replacing. Fresh oil of the correct grade helps them work properly. Persistent tapping after an oil change usually points to replacement.
