What does the ETC7238G viscous fan coupling do?
The ETC7238G is a temperature-sensitive coupling between the water pump drive and the engine cooling fan. It speeds the fan up when under-bonnet temperature is high and lets it freewheel when demand is low, cutting drag, fuel use and noise. Fitted to 2.5 turbo diesel, 200 TDi and 300 TDi engines.
What are the signs the viscous fan coupling is failing?
A failing ETC7238G viscous coupling usually shows as engine overheating in traffic, a constantly roaring fan, or poor heater performance. When the coupling seizes or loses its silicone fluid, fan speed no longer matches cooling demand. It's a common wear item on these TDi engines.
