Frequently asked questions

What does the front propshaft do on a Land Rover?
The front propshaft transmits drive from the transfer box front output to the front axle differential. It has a universal joint at each end for axle articulation and a splined sliding section that absorbs length change as the suspension moves. Fits Defender to 2006, Discovery 1 and Range Rover Classic.
Where is the front propshaft fitted?
The front propshaft sits between the transfer box front output flange and the front axle differential, running under the vehicle along the chassis. On the Discovery 1 it's fitted from VIN FA393361 to WA799999, and on Range Rover Classic petrol models less catalyst up to VIN HA610293.
What are the signs a front propshaft needs replacing?
Worn universal joints or a dry sliding spline are the usual causes of failure, typically producing vibration and a driveline clunk, especially on take-up. A propshaft with play at the joints or a seized spline should be replaced to avoid further driveline damage.
