Frequently asked questions

What does the FTC5102 synchro assembly do?
The FTC5102 is the fifth gear synchroniser assembly on the R380 five-speed manual gearbox's mainshaft. The fifth-gear selector fork moves the sliding sleeve, bringing the gear up to mainshaft speed through the synchro cone before the dog teeth engage.
What are the signs the FTC5102 needs replacing?
Difficulty selecting fifth gear, especially crunching or resistance on the shift, is the main symptom of a worn fifth gear synchroniser. This wear is specific to fifth: if other gears shift cleanly, the fault points to this synchro rather than the whole gearbox.
Does the FTC5102 fit all R380 gearboxes?
It fits R380 gearboxes from unit number 417153J onward, across Defender, Discovery 1, Discovery 2, Range Rover Classic and Range Rover P38. Earlier R380 gearboxes before this unit number may use a different fifth gear synchro spec, so check your gearbox number first.
What's the difference between the FTC5102 and the FTC5101?
The FTC5102 is the fifth gear synchroniser only, while the FTC5101 covers third and fourth gear synchromesh on the same R380 gearbox. They're separate assemblies and aren't interchangeable, so match the part to the gear that's giving trouble.
