What is the FTC5431 oil drain plug used for?

The FTC5431 is the axle differential drain plug. It threads into the lower drain port of the differential casing and seals it in service. You remove it to drain the axle oil during a fluid change. It's used on the Discovery 3 and 4, Range Rover L322, Range Rover Sport L320 and Freelander 1.

Where is the differential drain plug located?

The differential drain plug sits at the lowest point of the axle differential casing, in the drain port. On the Discovery 4 and Range Rover Sport L320 it's used on both the front and rear axles; on the Discovery 3 and Range Rover L322 it's the rear axle drain plug.

Should the drain plug be replaced or reused?

The drain plug can usually be reused if the plug and its sealing face are undamaged. It's typically renewed where the threads or sealing face are damaged to prevent weeping at the drain point. Many fitters replace it during an axle oil change for a reliable seal.
