What does the EGR valve assembly do on the 3.0 V6 diesel?

The EGR valve returns a metered portion of exhaust gas to the intake charge on the 3.0 V6 diesel, lowering peak combustion temperature and cutting NOx formation. This assembly includes the EGR cooler, which drops the temperature of the recirculated gas before it reaches the intake.

Why is this the left-hand unit, and does the right-hand side need one too?

The 3.0 V6 diesel uses a separate EGR valve and cooler for each cylinder bank, and LR018752 is the left-hand unit. The right-hand bank takes its own assembly, so ordering the wrong side is easy. Confirm which bank you're working on before ordering.
