The oil pump chain tensioner maintains correct tension on the oil pump drive chain, taking up slack and controlling chain whip as the chain drives the oil pump from the crankshaft. It sits in the lower oil pump drive of the 2.0L TiVCT turbo petrol engine in the Range Rover Evoque L538 and Discovery Sport.
Does this tensioner fit diesel engines?
This oil pump chain tensioner fits the 2.0L 16V TiVCT turbo petrol engine only (240PS and Gen2). It covers Range Rover Evoque L538, Discovery Sport, Freelander 2, Range Rover L405 and Range Rover Sport L494. Diesel engines use different oil pump drive parts, so confirm your engine is petrol.
Should the tensioner be replaced with the oil pump chain?
The oil pump chain tensioner is typically renewed whenever the lower timing and oil pump drive is opened up, alongside the oil pump chain and sprocket. On the 2.0L petrol Range Rover Evoque L538 and Discovery Sport, replacing it with the chain avoids repeating the job and keeps drive tension correct.
