What is the vacuum pump and what does it do?
The vacuum pump on the 2.0L petrol (Ingenium / GTDI) engine supplies the vacuum used by the brake booster and other vacuum-operated controls. Turbocharged direct-injection petrol engines make little manifold vacuum, so a dedicated pump provides it.
