What is the front axle drive shaft?
The front axle drive shaft transmits torque from the front differential output to the front wheel hub. It carries a constant velocity joint at each end: an inboard joint that absorbs suspension travel and plunge at the differential, and an outboard joint that drives the wheel through full steering lock.
Why do front drive shafts fail on these vehicles?
Front drive shaft wear usually starts with a split CV boot. Each joint runs in grease behind a sealed boot, and a split boot lets grease escape and dirt in, which wears the joint. The clicking under lock that follows is the classic sign of a worn outer CV joint.
