Frequently asked questions

What does the coolant expansion tank do on the 5.0L V8?
The coolant expansion tank is the pressurised header and overflow reservoir of the cooling system on the 5.0L V8 petrol engine. It absorbs coolant volume as it heats, returns it on cool-down, sets the fill point and level reference, and lets trapped air separate out of the coolant.
Which Land Rover does this expansion tank fit?
This expansion tank fits the Range Rover L322 2010-2012 with the 5.0L naturally aspirated V8 petrol engine only. It's an OEM BEHR part carrying Land Rover number LR181684. It isn't listed for other engines, so confirm yours is the NA 5.0L V8 before ordering.
What are the signs the expansion tank needs replacing?
The usual signs are hairline cracking at the moulding seam or around the neck and weeping at the hose spigots. Moulded tanks embrittle with heat cycling and can't be repaired, so a cracked or weeping tank is renewed. Coolant loss and low-level warnings often trace back here.
