Frequently asked questions

What does a dynamo to alternator conversion do on a Series 1?
It replaces the original dynamo charging system on the Land Rover Series 1 with an alternator. An alternator produces useful charge at idle and low engine speed, where a dynamo produces almost none, so the battery keeps charging in slow driving and with the lights on.
Why do Series 1 owners fit an alternator conversion?
Charging output is the main reason. The Series 1 dynamo was sized for a basic lighting and ignition load, so added electrics such as halogen headlamps, an electric fuel pump or a radio typically flatten the battery. An alternator carries that load and charges at tickover rather than only at road speed.
Does the wiring need changing for this conversion?
Yes, the charging circuit changes. The Series 1 dynamo runs through a separate control box, and an alternator regulates internally, so the control box is typically bypassed or removed and the charge and warning light wiring altered. Fitting an alternator without addressing the control box usually leaves the system charging incorrectly.
Is this a job that can be done at home?
Yes, for most Series 1 owners this is a home garage job. It typically involves fitting the mounting bracket and drive pulley, setting belt alignment and tension, then rewiring the charging circuit. Basic spanners, a socket set and a multimeter to confirm charging voltage are usually all that is needed.
