Frequently asked questions

What does this coolant expansion tank cap do?
The NTC7161LR is the genuine Land Rover coolant expansion tank cap, rated at 15 psi. It seals the expansion tank and regulates system pressure: it raises the coolant boiling point, vents through a relief valve above 15 psi, and lets coolant back in via a vacuum valve as the engine cools. It fits TDi and petrol Defender, Discovery 1 and Range Rover Classic.
How do I know the cap has failed?
A failed expansion tank cap usually can't hold its 15 psi rating because the seal has hardened or the valve has stuck. Symptoms include overheating, coolant boiling or loss, and a system that won't build pressure. Because it's inexpensive, it's worth replacing early when chasing a cooling fault.
Why is the 15 psi rating important on this cap?
The 15 psi rating sets the pressure at which the cap vents, which fixes the coolant boiling point for these engines. Using a cap with a different rating can cause overheating or over-pressurise the radiator and hoses. Always match the 15 psi cap specified for TDi and petrol Defender, Discovery 1 and Range Rover Classic.
