The expansion tank is the coolant reservoir in the cooling system of the TD6 3.0L BMW M57 diesel Range Rover L322. It absorbs coolant expansion as the engine heats, holds system pressure through its cap, and acts as the fill and level-check point for the circuit.

Why do these expansion tanks fail?

Expansion tanks fail because the plastic turns brittle with heat-cycling and age, cracking at the seams or around the cap neck and losing coolant. Signs include visible weeping, a dropping coolant level or lost pressure. On the M57 diesel a failed tank can lead to overheating.
