Frequently asked questions

What is the PRC6036 lower speedometer cable for?
The PRC6036 is the lower section of the speedometer drive cable on the Land Rover Defender (1987-2006) fitted with the overspeed audible warning. It runs from the gearbox up toward the speedometer as the lower half of a two-part cable run.
Which Defenders use this lower cable?
This lower cable fits the Defender with overspeed audible warning from VIN BA299085 onward. Earlier 90-inch wheelbase vehicles up to BA299084 use a different cable, so check your VIN before ordering.
Do I need the upper cable as well?
The PRC6036 covers the lower section only. Vehicles with the overspeed audible warning use a two-part cable, so a separate upper cable completes the run. Check whether your upper section also needs replacing when fitting this lower cable.
What are the signs this cable needs replacing?
A worn speedometer cable typically gives a flickering or dead speedometer, or a whirring noise. On the Defender's two-part setup the fault can be in either the lower PRC6036 section or the upper cable, so check both when diagnosing.
