Frequently asked questions

What is the RTC3534G wheel bearing kit for?
RTC3534G is the imperial wheel bearing kit for Land Rover Series, covering the drive shaft and hub bearings for one wheel. It's supplied per wheel and suits both front and rear hubs. Imperial refers to the bearing sizing used before Land Rover switched the hubs to metric.
Which Series models take the imperial kit?
The imperial kit fits Series II and IIA from 1958 to 1971, and Series III from 1971 up to June 1980. Series III production switched to metric hub bearings after June 1980, so later Series III vehicles need the metric kit RTC3537 instead.
How do I tell whether my Series has imperial or metric hubs?
The June 1980 build date is the dividing line on Series III. Built up to that point it takes the imperial kit, after it the metric kit. Where the build date is unclear, measure the existing bearings or the stub axle before ordering. Hubs have often been swapped over the years.
How many kits are needed for a full set?
RTC3534G covers one wheel, so a full set of four hubs needs four kits. Wheel bearings are normally done in axle pairs at minimum, because the pair has seen the same mileage and loading. Fresh hub seals go in at the same time so the new bearings stay packed with grease.
What are the signs Series wheel bearings need replacing?
Worn Series wheel bearings usually show as a rumble or growl that rises with road speed, play felt when rocking the wheel top to bottom, and grease weeping past the hub seal. On a live axle Land Rover, bearing wear also loads the stub axle and hub, so it isn't a job to postpone.
