What does the water pump do on a Rover V8?
The water pump circulates coolant through the Rover V8 block, cylinder heads and radiator to carry heat away from the engine. It mounts on the front face of the engine and is belt-driven from the crankshaft. This unit is supplied with its gasket.
What are the signs of a failing water pump?
A weeping water pump usually leaves coolant traces or a dried white residue below the pump at the front of the engine. A rumbling or grinding from the front that changes with revs typically points to a failed pump bearing, and overheating follows once the impeller stops moving coolant.
Does this fit all V8 Range Rover P38 models?
No. This pump is listed for the P38 up to VIN XA417382. For Discovery 1 and Range Rover Classic it's listed for the Rover V8 EFI from VIN MA081992. Check your VIN against those breaks before ordering.
Should the coolant be replaced at the same time?
The gasket is supplied with this pump, so it goes on with the new unit. The cooling system has to be drained to change the pump, so it's normal to refill with fresh coolant rather than reuse what came out.
