What is the IRD unit and what does it do on a Freelander 1?

The IRD (Intermediate Reduction Drive) is the fixed-ratio transfer stage of the Freelander 1 four-wheel-drive system. It bolts to the gearbox in place of a transfer box and splits drive two ways, feeding the front driveshafts through its internal differential and the rear propshaft through the hypoid gear set.
