The ERR4709 is the camshaft dowel pin for the 2.5L 300TDi timing drive. It fixes the angular position of the camshaft drive gear on the camshaft so valve timing stays correct when the timing gears are assembled.
Where does the dowel pin sit on the engine?
The dowel pin sits at the front timing end of the 300TDi engine, locating the cam gear on the camshaft. It's a small but critical locating part in the gear-driven timing setup. Fits Defender, Discovery 1 and Range Rover Classic 300TDi.
Should the dowel pin be replaced when doing the timing?
This dowel pin is typically renewed if it's worn, sheared or loose, since a slack dowel lets the cam gear shift and upsets valve timing. It's cheap insurance to replace when the 300TDi timing gears are apart.
