Frequently asked questions

What does the ERR5924 camshaft do in the 3.9L V8?
The ERR5924 camshaft sits within the cylinder block of the 3.9L V8 EFI petrol engine, a cam-in-block overhead-valve design. Driven from the crankshaft by the timing gears, it actuates the hydraulic lifters and pushrods that open and close the valves. Its lobe profile sets the valve timing and lift.
Which Land Rovers use the 3.9L V8 camshaft?
This 3.9L V8 camshaft fits the Discovery 1 (1989-1998) and Range Rover Classic (1992-1994) with the 3.9L V8 EFI petrol engine. The 4.2L V8 fitted to the LSE uses a different camshaft, so check your engine's displacement before ordering.
Why do Rover V8 camshafts wear out?
Rover V8 camshafts typically wear on the lobes because this cam-in-block design runs flat tappets directly against the lobe. Signs include a persistent tapping that won't adjust out, lumpy idle and lost power. A worn lobe also damages its lifter, so cam and lifters are usually replaced together.
Should the lifters be replaced with the camshaft?
Yes, replace the hydraulic lifters whenever you fit a new camshaft. Each lifter beds into its original lobe, and reusing old lifters on fresh lobes typically causes rapid wear. New lifters plus a correct running-in procedure protect the new 3.9L V8 cam.
