What does the ERC4949 hydraulic tappet do?

The ERC4949 is a hydraulic tappet for the Rover V8 petrol valve train. Engine oil pressure fills its internal chamber to take up valve clearance automatically, so the valve gear needs no manual adjustment. Fits V8 Defender, Discovery 1 and 2, Range Rover Classic and P38.

How many hydraulic tappets does a V8 engine need?

A Rover V8 uses sixteen hydraulic tappets, one per valve. They're normally renewed as a complete set when the valve gear is overhauled, since mixing old and new lifters typically gives uneven operation. Order sixteen for a full engine rebuild.

Why do hydraulic tappets get noisy on a V8?

Hydraulic tappets typically get noisy when they wear or when oil supply drops, giving a ticking or clatter from the top of the V8 that doesn't clear once warm. A collapsed lifter can affect valve operation, so a persistently noisy tappet is usually replaced.
