Frequently asked questions

What is the ERC4949G hydraulic tappet?
The ERC4949G is an OEM hydraulic tappet, made by AE, for the Rover V8 petrol valve train. Oil pressure fills its internal chamber to maintain zero valve clearance automatically, so no manual adjustment is needed. Fits V8 Defender, Discovery 1 and 2, Range Rover Classic and P38. Carries a 2 year guarantee.
How many ERC4949G tappets are needed for a full V8?
A Rover V8 takes sixteen hydraulic tappets in total, one for each valve. Tappets are best fitted as a complete matched set during a valve gear overhaul rather than singly, so a full engine needs sixteen of these AE lifters.
What causes a hydraulic tappet to fail?
Hydraulic tappets typically fail through internal wear or loss of oil pressure, which stops them holding clearance and produces a ticking noise from the top of the engine. Dirty oil accelerates this. A noisy or collapsed lifter on the V8 is normally replaced to restore quiet, correct valve operation.
