What does this front brake caliper do?

This front left-hand brake caliper carries the brake pads and hydraulic pistons for the solid (non-vented) front disc setup. Under braking the pistons clamp the pads against the front disc to generate stopping force at the wheel. It's the left-hand front unit and mounts to the front hub carrier.
