Frequently asked questions

What is the STC4807R universal joint used for?

The STC4807R universal joint is the cross-and-bearing (Hardy Spicer type) joint in the propshaft of the Land Rover Defender up to 2006 (TD5). It lets the propshaft transmit drive through an angle between the transfer box and axle while the suspension moves, and it measures 93.4mm across the bearing caps.

How do I confirm this is the right universal joint size for my Defender?

This is the 93.4mm universal joint fitted to the TD5 Defender front propshaft. UJ sizes vary between engine and propshaft variants, so measure across the bearing caps before ordering. Confirm the 93.4mm size when fitting other engine variants.

What are the signs a propshaft universal joint needs replacing?

A propshaft universal joint typically fails when the needle-roller bearings in the caps wear or lose grease, usually showing as a clunk on drive take-up, vibration at speed, or play when you twist the shaft by hand. Left unchecked, a seized joint can damage the propshaft, so replace worn joints promptly.
