Gloeibougies worden per cilinder in de cilinderkop geïnstalleerd en verwarmen de verbrandingskamer vóór en tijdens een koude start. Wanneer de bougie onder spanning staat, verhoogt het verwarmingselement snel de temperatuur van de verbrandingskamer, waardoor een betrouwbare ontsteking van het brandstof-luchtmengsel bij lage omgevingstemperaturen mogelijk is.
