Gloeibougies worden per cilinder in de cilinderkop geïnstalleerd en verwarmen de verbrandingskamer voor en tijdens een koude start. Wanneer bekrachtigd, verhoogt het verwarmingselement van de bougie snel de temperatuur van de verbrandingskamer, waardoor een betrouwbare ontsteking van het brandstof-luchtmengsel bij lage omgevingstemperaturen mogelijk is.
