Frequently asked questions

What does the rocker shaft bush do on a Land Rover engine?
The rocker shaft bush is the bearing surface that supports the rocker shaft in the cylinder head. It's pressed into a rocker pedestal and lets the rocker arms pivot as the pushrods open and close the valves. Fitted to the 2.25L and 2.5L 4-cylinder petrol engines in Series 2/3 and Defender.
How many rocker shaft bushes are needed for a rebuild?
Rocker shaft bushes are typically renewed as a complete set when the rocker assembly is overhauled, not one at a time. The 4-cylinder engine usually uses one bush per rocker pedestal, so you'll need several to do the job. Replacing them together keeps oil pressure even across the rocker gear.
Why do rocker shaft bushes wear out?
Rocker shaft bushes wear because they carry constant pivoting load and oil flow at the top of the engine. As the bush wears, the shaft moves in its seat and bleeds off oil pressure to the rocker gear, which typically shows up as a noisy, clattery valvetrain. They're renewed as a set during a top-end overhaul.
