Frequently asked questions

What is the AEU2538R brake caliper and what does it do?
The AEU2538R is the front left-hand brake caliper for the Land Rover Defender up to 2016. It straddles the brake disc at the front hub and houses the pistons that clamp the pads against the disc under hydraulic pressure. This is the early-type caliper.
How is the early-type caliper different from the later one?
The early-type AEU2538R accepts brake pads retained by a pin passing over the pad. Later Defender calipers typically use a different pad retention method, so the two aren't usually interchangeable. Check that your current caliper uses pin-over-pad retention before ordering to avoid a mismatch.
What are the signs a brake caliper needs replacing?
Common signs include the piston seizing, fluid leaking from the piston seals, or uneven pad wear from a sticking piston. On the Defender, a seized front caliper can make the vehicle pull to one side under braking. Replace it if the piston won't retract or the body is corroded.
