What does the BA 2354B top coolant hose do?

The BA 2354B is the top (upper) radiator hose for the Land Rover Discovery 2 Td5 cooling system. It carries hot coolant from the engine outlet at the thermostat housing to the top of the radiator, where heat is shed before the coolant returns to the engine. It is a silicone hose finished in blue.

Why choose a silicone coolant hose over the standard rubber one?

A silicone coolant hose tolerates higher temperatures and resists the perishing and softening that ages the original moulded rubber hose.
