Frequently asked questions

What is the vacuum advance hose used for?
The vacuum advance hose carries ported vacuum from the carburettor to the distributor's vacuum advance capsule. That lets the capsule advance the ignition timing as engine load changes. It's part of the distributor vacuum advance circuit on carburettor petrol engines.
Which models and engines does it fit?
It fits the 2.25 and 2.5 four-cylinder carburettor petrol engines in the Land Rover Series 2 and 3 and the Defender. It's for carburettor ignition only, not injection or diesel engines.
What happens when this hose perishes?
A cracked or perished vacuum hose leaks vacuum, so the distributor can't advance the timing properly. That typically shows up as poor throttle response, flat performance or pinking under load. The rubber hardens with age, so it's worth renewing if it's old.
