Frequently asked questions

What does the Front Crankshaft Oil Seal (ERR1632) do?
The Front Crankshaft Oil Seal (ERR1632) seals the front of the crankshaft where it passes through the timing cover. It stops oil escaping at the crankshaft pulley and damper end of the engine. Fitted across Land Rover Series 2 and 3, Defender up to 2016, Discovery 1, Range Rover Classic, and P38.
Where does this seal sit on the engine?
This seal sits in the timing cover at the front of the engine, around the crankshaft nose behind the pulley or damper. It runs on the crankshaft or pulley sealing surface. It's used on petrol and diesel engines across the Land Rover Series 2 and 3 through to the Range Rover P38.
Should the front crankshaft seal be replaced when doing timing work?
Yes, the front crankshaft oil seal is typically replaced whenever the timing cover or crankshaft pulley is removed. Reusing an old seal often leads to an oil leak at the pulley end. Fit a fresh ERR1632 and check the crankshaft sealing surface for grooving before reassembly.
