The front crankshaft oil seal seals the running clearance between the rotating crankshaft nose and the stationary front cover housing. It retains engine oil and stops leakage at the front of the crankcase. It sits in the front cover assembly, behind the crankshaft pulley.

What are the signs the front crankshaft seal is leaking?

A leaking front crankshaft seal usually shows as engine oil weeping from the front cover, often thrown onto the timing area, crank pulley and lower belt. The seal hardens with age and the crank nose can wear a groove. Left alone, oil loss and belt contamination typically follow.
