Frequently asked questions

What does the ERR2803 thermostat do on a 200TDi engine?
The ERR2803 is an 88°C thermostat for the 2.5L 200TDi diesel. It regulates coolant flow between the engine and radiator, opening at 88°C to maintain the correct operating temperature. It fits the Defender, Discovery 1 (to VIN LA081991), and Range Rover Classic with the 200TDi engine.
What are the signs the thermostat has failed on a 200TDi?
A thermostat stuck closed causes overheating; one stuck open prevents the engine reaching normal temperature, leading to poor heater output and higher fuel consumption. On 200TDi engines, slow warming and a temperature gauge that stays low often indicate a stuck-open thermostat.
Should the thermostat housing gasket be replaced at the same time?
Yes. It's good practice to replace the housing gasket (ERR3682) when fitting a new thermostat. The gasket seals the housing to the engine, and a failed one causes a coolant leak right at the repair point. Fitting both together avoids having to redo the job.
