Frequently asked questions

What is the carburettor insulator used for?
The carburettor insulator is a heat-isolating spacer fitted between the 2-barrel carburettor and the inlet manifold on the Land Rover Defender (1987-2006) with 2.25L or 2.5L 4-cylinder petrol engines. It thermally decouples the carburettor from engine heat, preventing fuel vapourisation, known as percolation, in the float chamber during hot running.
What are the signs the insulator needs replacing?
The insulator typically needs replacing when its faces harden, crack, or distort from repeated heat cycling, which can cause an air leak or fuel percolation. Symptoms usually include hot-start problems, rough idle, or lean running. Fit a new one whenever the carburettor is removed to guarantee a clean seal.
What other part numbers is this insulator known by?
This insulator cross-references to ERC8460 and BR 1994. Both numbers refer to the same 2-barrel carburettor insulator for the 2.25L and 2.5L petrol Defender, so you can order with confidence if you see either code listed elsewhere.
