Frequently asked questions

What does the ETC1260 viscous unit do?
The ETC1260 viscous unit, or viscous fan coupling, drives the engine cooling fan on the Land Rover Discovery 1 and Range Rover Classic. It uses a temperature-sensitive silicone fluid to engage the fan harder as underbonnet heat rises, pulling more air through the radiator.
Where is the viscous coupling fitted?
The viscous coupling sits between the water pump pulley and the cooling fan at the front of the engine on the Discovery 1 and Range Rover Classic. The fan bolts to it, and it drives off the water pump nose.
How do I know the viscous unit is failing?
A failing viscous unit typically shows up as overheating in traffic, a fan that spins too freely when cold, or one that stays locked and roars constantly. On the Discovery 1 and Range Rover Classic V8, a weak coupling can't pull enough air at low speed.
Does the ETC1260 fit my Discovery or Range Rover Classic?
The ETC1260 fits the Land Rover Discovery 1 (1989-1998) and Range Rover Classic (1986-1994) with V8 EFI petrol or VM turbo diesel engines. It also lists as AllMakes ETC1260 and Hotbray ETC1260X. Check your engine and fan setup before ordering.
