Frequently asked questions

What is the ETC7357 con rod bolt and what does it do?
The ETC7357 con rod bolt clamps the big-end bearing cap to the connecting rod, holding the shell bearings around the crankshaft big-end journal. It's a critical engine fastener in the connecting-rod assembly on the 2.5 litre four-cylinder diesel, turbo-diesel and petrol engines.
How many con rod bolts are needed for an engine rebuild?
Typically you need two con rod bolts per connecting rod, so eight for a complete four-cylinder engine. Order to suit the number of rods you're rebuilding rather than a single bolt.
Can con rod bolts be reused or should they be replaced?
Con rod bolts are typically replaced rather than reused whenever the big-end caps are disturbed. They're highly stressed fasteners, and reusing bolts that have already been torqued risks failure. Fit new bolts and torque them to the workshop manual specification during any bottom-end rebuild.
