Frequently asked questions

What does the FRC1344 1st speed gear do in the LT95 gearbox?
The FRC1344 is the 1st speed gear for the LT95 four-speed gearbox, part of the mainshaft constant-mesh cluster. It meshes with the layshaft gear to give the lowest forward ratio and is engaged by the 1st/2nd synchroniser hub. The LT95 is the permanent four-wheel-drive unit fitted behind the V8.
Which Land Rovers use this LT95 1st gear?
This LT95 1st gear fits V8 models running the LT95 four-speed gearbox: Range Rover Classic (1970-1983), Series III 109 V8 Stage 1 and 101 Forward Control, and Defender 110 (1983-1985) with the early LT95. Confirm your gearbox is the LT95 before ordering.
What are the signs this 1st gear needs replacing?
The 1st gear typically needs replacing when its teeth chip or wear, or the synchro cone surface wears, causing crunching or jumping out of 1st. As a constant-mesh gear, damage usually shows as noise under load. Replacing it means splitting the gearbox, so it's usually done during a full rebuild.
