Frequently asked questions

What is the FRC7414 torsion spring and what does it do?
It's the torsion spring for the gear lever mechanism of the LT77 and R380 five-speed manual gearboxes. Fitted within the gearchange housing, it supplies the return tension that biases the gear lever back to its central plane and maintains positive selector feel.
What are the signs this torsion spring needs replacing?
A vague or sloppy gearchange with poor self-centring is the common sign. When the spring corrodes or fatigues, the lever no longer returns cleanly to its central plane. It's typically inspected and renewed during gearbox or gearchange servicing on the Defender.
How many are needed and which gearboxes does it fit?
One torsion spring is typically needed per gearchange mechanism. It fits the Land Rover Defender LT77 gearbox (up to VIN LA939975, pre-1994) and R380 gearbox (up to 2006). Confirm which gearbox your Defender has, as the two differ.
