De plaat zit tussen de fusee/naaf en de remschijf en beschermt de schijf en het binnenoppervlak van de remblokken tegen modder, water en wegvuil dat door het wiel wordt opgeworpen. Het helpt voorkomen dat gruis op de remoppervlakken terechtkomt en vertraagt de corrosie van de schijf.
