Het dicht het punt af waar de aandrijfas de draaibare behuizing binnengaat, houdt de smeermiddelen van de draaibare en homokinetische koppeling binnen en sluit water, zand en wegverontreiniging buiten. Een versleten afdichting op dit grensvlak zorgt voor olieverlies en binnendringen van vuil, wat de slijtage van het homokinetische gewricht en de draaibare onderdelen versnelt, dus wordt het vernieuwd telkens wanneer de draaiende samenstelling wordt onderhouden.
