Frequently asked questions

What is the steering rack boot kit (LR002682) and what does it do?
The steering rack boot kit renews the concertina gaiter that seals the steering rack on the Freelander 2. It fits over the rack housing and inner tie rod, keeping the rack lubricant in and dirt and water out. A split boot lets grit into the rack.
How many kits do I need for the Freelander 2?
Each kit covers one side of the steering rack, so you'll typically need two kits to do both sides. Land Rover lists a quantity of two per vehicle. Many people renew both gaiters at the same time while the job is open.
Why does the steering rack boot need replacing?
The steering rack boot fails when it splits or perishes with age, letting grit and water reach the rack and inner tie rod. Left unchanged, that contamination accelerates wear in the steering gear, so a torn boot should be renewed promptly.
What's included in the steering rack boot kit?
The kit contains one gaiter and two retaining clips, enough to renew the boot on one side of the steering rack. The clips secure each end of the gaiter so it stays sealed against the rack housing and the inner tie rod.
