What does the front lambda sensor do on the V8?
The front lambda sensor (oxygen sensor) sits on the exhaust downpipe, upstream of the catalytic converter, on the 4.0/4.6L V8 petrol engine in the Discovery 2. It measures oxygen in the exhaust gas and feeds the signal to the engine control module, which uses it to hold the air/fuel mixture in closed-loop control.
Which sensor position is this, and how many does the V8 have?
This is the front (upstream, pre-catalyst) lambda sensor for the 4.0/4.6L V8. These engines typically run a sensor on each downpipe ahead of the catalytic converter, plus post-cat sensors, so check which position you're replacing. This part covers the front sensor on the Discovery 2.
What are the signs of a failing lambda sensor?
A failing lambda sensor on the V8 Discovery 2 typically causes rough running, poor fuel economy, a stored fault code and sometimes a lit engine warning light. As the sensor ages its response slows, so the engine control module can't fuel accurately. A dead sensor usually forces open-loop running and higher emissions.
Can the front lambda sensor be fitted at home?
The front lambda sensor can usually be replaced at home with a lambda socket or deep socket and some penetrating oil, since the threads tend to seize in the hot downpipe.
