Frequently asked questions

What does the NSC100790 crankshaft position sensor do on the Td5 engine?
The NSC100790 is the crankshaft position sensor for the Land Rover Td5 2.5L 5-cylinder diesel engine. It reads the toothed reluctor ring on the flywheel to signal crankshaft speed and position to the ECU, which uses this data to control fuelling and injection timing. Fits Defender TD5 1998 to 2006 and Discovery 2 TD5 1998 to 2004.
What are the symptoms of a failed crank position sensor on a Td5?
A faulty crank sensor on the Td5 typically causes a no-start condition, intermittent stalling, or hard starting. In many cases the engine cranks but won't fire, or cuts out at speed. An ECU fault code usually accompanies the failure. The Td5 can't run at all without a valid crank signal.
Is the NSC100790 a DIY replacement or does it need specialist equipment?
The sensor bolts to the engine block at the flywheel housing and is typically accessible from underneath. Replacement is a DIY-able job with basic tools, but the ECU should be scanned for fault codes before and after to confirm the fault is cleared. The Delphi OEM specification ensures the correct signal tolerance for the Td5 ECU.
