Frequently asked questions

What is the thermostat and what does it do?
The thermostat regulates coolant flow inside the engine cooling system. While the engine is cold it stays closed, so the engine reaches operating temperature quickly. At its rated 82°C it opens and routes coolant through the radiator to keep the running temperature stable. It mounts in the thermostat housing.
Does this thermostat fit both Td5 and later TDCi engines?
Yes. This thermostat fits the Defender 1998-2016 across the Td5 and the 2.4L and 2.2L TDCi Puma diesels, and the Discovery 2 1998-2004 with Td5 diesel or V8 petrol. The same part serves all these engines, so check your housing matches before ordering.
What happens if the thermostat fails?
A failed thermostat causes overheating when it sticks closed, or slow warm-up and overcooling when it sticks open. Overcooling hurts fuel economy and cabin heat, while a stuck-closed unit risks engine damage. Fluctuating temperature readings are a common early sign.
