Thermostaat reguleert de koelvloeistofstroom binnen het motorkoelsysteem, met een openingstemperatuur van 82°C.

Het blijft gesloten terwijl de motor koud is, waardoor koelvloeistof naar het blok wordt beperkt, zodat de motor snel de bedrijfstemperatuur bereikt. Zodra de koelvloeistof 82°C bereikt, opent de thermostaat, waardoor de stroom via de radiator wordt geleid om warmte af te voeren en een stabiele bedrijfstemperatuur te handhaven. Een defecte thermostaat veroorzaakt oververhitting als deze gesloten blijft hangen, of een trage opwarming en overkoeling als deze open blijft hangen.
