Frequently asked questions

What is the ERR5992 front crankshaft oil seal and what does it do?
The ERR5992 front crankshaft oil seal seals the nose of the crankshaft where it passes through the timing cover on the Td5 2.5L 5-cylinder turbo diesel. It keeps engine oil inside the timing case at the front of the engine.
Where is the front crankshaft seal located?
The front crankshaft seal sits in the timing cover around the crankshaft snout, behind the crankshaft pulley and torsional damper. Reaching it usually means removing the pulley, so it's commonly renewed whenever the front cover, timing assembly or pulley is disturbed.
What are the signs this seal needs replacing?
A failing front crankshaft seal typically shows as an oil leak at the front of the engine, often with oil thrown onto the drive belt or timing cover area. Renew it once the sealing lip hardens or weeps to avoid oil loss and belt contamination.
Any tips for fitting the crankshaft oil seal?
Fit the crankshaft oil seal with the sealing lip and bore clean and lightly lubricated, so the lip isn't damaged or rolled on installation. Make sure the crankshaft snout is unscored, as a worn snout will cause the new seal to leak.
