Frequently asked questions

What does the front crankshaft oil seal do?
The front crankshaft oil seal seals the nose of the crankshaft where it passes through the timing cover on the Td5 2.5L 5-cylinder turbo diesel engine. It sits behind the crankshaft pulley and damper, keeping engine oil sealed inside the timing case.
When should the front crank seal be replaced?
It's a routine renewal item whenever the front cover, timing assembly or crankshaft pulley is disturbed on the Td5. Fitting a fresh seal during that work avoids a repeat strip-down later just to cure an oil leak.
What are the signs the front crank seal has failed?
A worn front crank seal usually shows as an oil leak at the front of the Td5 engine, often dripping around the lower timing area. The sealing lip hardens and loses its grip on the crankshaft with age and heat. Replace it once it weeps.
What should I know before fitting this seal?
Fit the seal with the lip and bore clean and lightly lubricated to avoid damaging it on installation. The crankshaft pulley and damper have to come off to reach it, so it's usually done alongside timing work rather than as a quick job.
