De turbocompressor onttrekt energie aan de uitlaatgasstroom om een compressorwiel aan te drijven, waardoor gecomprimeerde inlaatlucht de motor in wordt geperst om de volumetrische efficiëntie en het vermogen te verhogen ten opzichte van een atmosferische motor.
